We asked 2023 Kw’umut Lelum Indspire Award winner Kaden Wigard to share his story with us - about his experiences in school, his education journey, and what advice he might have for others as they consider their future.

What are you studying and how did you decide which program to take?
I am currently in the process of getting my Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of British Columbia. I chose to study this as it is an all-encompassing degree that allows me to explore my interests in anatomy, genetics, physiology, and ecology.
Share a bit about your educational journey so far.
My educational journey has been very rewarding. Now that I am attending post-secondary, I can explore and focus on my educational interests. I have also had the opportunity to join groups on campus, meet new people and become more involved in my community.
Who or what has been your biggest support at post-secondary?
My parents have been my biggest support at post-secondary. They have supported me unconditionally through my endeavours and their guidance has continued to build my character and has brought me to where I am today.
What is something you wish you knew before heading off to post-secondary education?
Something I wish I knew before attending post-secondary education is that everyone around you is experiencing the same things so don’t be afraid to reach out to them. Make some new friends or try a new activity, don’t be afraid to expand your horizons and be yourself.
What are your hopes, dreams, and goals for the future and what has the Kw’umut Lelum Indspire Award meant for your continued pursuit of these goals and
After I complete my bachelor’s degree, I plan on applying to medical school to become a doctor. This award allowed me to focus solely on my studies and eased the financial stress of school as I did not need to worry about working during the semester.
