Reciprocity Giving
As one of only three Indigenous-led community foundations in Canada, our goal is to create reciprocal relations between our donors and recipients—relationships that lead to deeper understandings and build a strong collective community. Our newsletter and blog posts create an opportunity for us to provide updates, share our impact and offer insights into the Indigenous values and principles that guide our work. In this, I wanted to share more on the idea of reciprocity, which is at the foundation of much of our work. Thank you for being part of our community.
The Value of Reciprocity
I have always known Indigenous people to be very generous, starting with my grandparents who, despite a language barrier, provided me with a sense of belonging and unconditional love. Through continued observation and teachings shared by Coast Salish Elders and Knowledge Holders, I have also come to understand the ethical connection between generosity and reciprocity. To give is to reciprocate our abilities and the resources that are available to us, while demonstrating a collective responsibility to ensure a cared for, and mutually benefiting existence for all.
