KLF creates valuable CLB Indigenous Navigator role in support of education

The Kw’umut Lelum Foundation believes that every Indigenous child deserves a bright future and access to quality education. That’s why we are offering the help of our CLB Indigenous Navigator to assist you with the application process from start to finish. And that’s why we are also committing to match the funds provided by the government – so you can save up to $4000 for your child’s education with no obligation to contribute any of your own money.

Did you know the Government of Canada can provide free money for your child’s future education after high school? Open to low-income families, the Canada Learning Bond (CLB) offers an initial $500 to help you start saving. Your child can also receive an additional $100 per year until age 15, up to a total of $2000.

Who is eligible?

A child is eligible for this money if they:

·         Are born on or after January 1, 2004

·         Have a valid Social Insurance Number

·         Are a resident of Canada

·         Are culturally connected to any of Kw’umut Lelum’s nine Member Nations

·         Are from a low-income family

·         The CLB must be requested by the child’s primary caregiver, their spouse or common-law partner

What does the CLB Indigenous Navigator do?

Our navigator will work directly with you to

·         Help determine your eligibility for the CLB

·         Help you choose and set up the RESP that is best for your family

·         Help you complete the application process from start to finish

You don’t require a bank account, and the funds do not affect provincial or federal income support

What is an RESP?

A Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) is a special government-registered savings account for parents or caregivers who want to save for their child's education after high school. The account can be used for full or part-time studies including:

·         Apprenticeship programs

·         Trade schools

·         Colleges/universities

The funds need to be used within 35 years of opening the RESP.
